STEPHEN WILLIAMSON, CLARINET

Enjoy the music from American visionaries: Philip Glass, George Gershwin, Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland.

THE MUSIC

Philip Glass — Anniversary Concert Overture
Commissioned by the symphonies of Baltimore and Toronto, the overture celebrates the War of 1812 bicentenniel and the friendship that later developed between Canada and the United States.

George Gershwin — American in Paris
This colorful music captures the sights and sounds of Paris from the view of an American wandering through the streets.

Aaron Copland — Clarinet Concerto
Copland’s lyrical Clarinet Concerto, written for Benny Goodman, infuses jazz and swing with Brazilian folk music.

Leonard Bernstein — Prelude, Fugue and Riffs
Bernstein was a classical musician who loved jazz. “We always speak of ‘playing’ music,” he said. “But jazz is real play. It ‘fools around’ with the notes, so to speak, and has fun with them.”

Aaron Copland — Appalachian Spring
Appalachian Spring captures the “American sound” and is filled with endless possibilities. The end is based on the Shaker tune, "Simple Gifts."
