

Whitworth Symphony Orchestra, “Portrait of Portugal”

The final concert this season by the Whitworth Symphony Orchestra will explore overlooked corners of the symphonic repertoire. The performance will open with the Overture to Taras Bulba by Ukrainian composer, Mykola Lysenko. Rienholt Glière’s Symphony No. 1 in E-flat was written when he was only 25 and reveals the melodic and orchestration gifts which made him famous. The final piece on the program is Symphony No. 3 by Portuguese composer, Joly Braga Santos. Santos studied with Hermann Scherchen and was championed by conductor Pedro de Freitas Branco, who premiered most of Santos’ works with the Portuguese Radio Symphony. The works bright colors, imaginative orchestration and soaring melodies will leave audiences enthralled.
