SPOKANE, WA – Jan. 22, 2017…Producer, composer, keyboardist and vocalist, Sergio Mendes, one of the most internationally successful Brazilian artists of all time, will bring his signature mix of bossa nova/samba and his distinctive pop melodies to Spokane on June 12, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. at Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox.
The concert will feature hits from Sergio Mendes & Brasil ‘66, as well as classics from his 50 years as a recording artist. Mendes has recorded more than 35 albums, and is a three-time Grammy® Award winner, as well as an Oscar® nominee in the “Best Original Song” category for “Real in Rio” from the animated film, Rio.
For this concert tour, Mendes will be joined by singers Gracinha Leporace (his wife) and Katie Hampton, rapper H20, and band members Scott Mayo (kbds, sax, flute, vocals), Leo Costa (drums), Andre De Sant’anna (bass), Kleber Jorge (guitars), and Gibi (percussion).
Mendes started his career with 1961’s Dance Moderno and the groups Bossa Rio and the Sergio Mendes Trio. His earlier single, “Mas Que Nada,” marked the first time a song sung entirely in Portuguese hit Billboard’s pop chart in the United States. But it was Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66 which sparked global stardom. After performing Burt Bacharach’s “The Look of Love” at the 1968 Academy Awards, their version went to the Top 10, quickly followed by their hits, “The Fool on the Hill,” and “Scarborough Fair.” Enjoying immense popularity, Mendes added soul and funk to his jazz and pop, but always with a Brazilian rhythm.
In the ‘80s, Mendes scored with the No. 1 adult contemporary and pop Top 10 hit, “Never Gonna Let You Go,” and, in 1992, he was awarded his first Grammy® in the category of Best World Music for his album, Brasileiro. Since then, Mendes has won two Latin Grammy® awards for Best Brazilian Record, Timeless (2006), and Bom Tempo (2010).
Mendes’ lifetime of innovation and versatility has resulted in collaborations with a wide range of artists. His Timeless CD was a project with contemporary pop, rock, urban and hip-hop artists, including Justin Timberlake, John Legend, and the Black Eyed Peas. In 2011, Mendes’ 39th album, Celebration: A Musical Journey, highlighted his 50 years as a recording artist and included classics from his career.
